Levels & Falls

Getting Levels & Falls Right

Before any excavation, we work out the finished levels and the falls needed to direct surface water away from the house. That decides the excavation depth and how the formwork is set, and it's far easier to get right before the pour than to fix afterwards.

Where a patio or path meets the house, a driveway or the lawn, the levels and edges need to tie in cleanly, with no trip edges and no low spots where water sits. When one crew controls the whole job, levels are set and checked against each other rather than in isolation.

Surfaces are formed with a fall so water runs away from walls and doorways, not towards them.

Edges and levels tie in neatly where the patio meets the house, driveway or garden.

How We Build a Path or Patio

Every path and patio we build is managed in-house from excavation through to the finished surface. The crew that prepares the sub-base is the same one that pours and finishes the concrete, so nothing gets lost between stages.

Levels and Falls

We establish the finished levels and the falls needed to direct water away from the house before anything else happens.

Removal and Excavation

Any old concrete is removed, then we excavate to the required depth for the slab and sub-base.

Sub-Base Preparation

We prepare and compact the sub-base so the slab doesn't settle or crack over time.

Edge Formwork

Formwork is set to the correct width, level and fall. Accurate edges give clean lines and the right drainage geometry.

Reinforcement

We supply and place reinforcement to suit the area. Where a path crosses a driveway or vehicle access point, it's reinforced for the extra load.

Pour, Finish and Seal

We pour and finish the concrete in your chosen style, place control joints at the right spacing, and seal the surface if you've chosen sealing.

Curing and First Use

Light foot traffic is typically possible within 24 to 48 hours. We'll give you guidance on when it's ready for furniture, pergola posts or vehicles.
